Closing the Loop With Microgreens
At KIJANIPRINT MICROFARM, one of the simplest ways we reduce waste is by reusing everything left after harvest. When each tray is cut, the microgreen pieces that do not go into clamshells, along with the roots and soil base, are set aside instead of being thrown out. Nothing is wasted. Everything is reused.
Those leftovers go straight to Urban Bush Sistah’s Community Market and Garden, where the chickens eat all of it, the greens, the roots, the whole base. It is one of our favorite parts of the process because every bit cycles back into the ecosystem through the hens and the compost they help create.
Dropping off the greens also means a few minutes to check in at the chicken coop, catching up on the latest news from the hen house while the curious birds wander around and do what they do best. Simple, sustainable, and rooted in community, exactly how we want to grow.
